Amazon.com As formulaic, utterly inoffensive romantic comedies go, Sweet Home Alabama could be better, and could be worse. It's a variant of Julia Roberts's Something to Talk About, with all the same strengths and weaknesses, and Reese Witherspoon is definitely its saving grace. As an Alabama country girl turned hot New York fashion designer, Witherspoon finds the genuine emotions hidden under a blandly familiar plot, making her character's romantic indecisiveness seem not only credible but disarmingly appealing. She's just agreed to marry the Camelot-bred son (Patrick Dempsey) of New York's no-nonsense mayor (Candice Bergen), but first she has to officially divorce the husband (Josh Lucas) she left behind years earlier... only to discover that their love is stronger than ever. The rest, of course, is a foregone conclusion, but with a sharp supporting cast and a few charming moments, Sweet Home Alabama will satisfy anyone who prefers safe, reassuring entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Sweet Home Alabama DVD August 16, 2010 Tobias My DVD came much sooner than I had anticipated and was in excellent condition. Excellent value and wonderful service.
Reese Witherspoon's Southern Charm Immortalized in this fantastic film July 28, 2010 Catie615 Sweet Home Alabama fits the mold for a romantic comedy, but adds on that southern charm and draw that makes everything more delightful. Witherspoon shines as the charming Melanie Carmichael and Lucas adds to that charm with his heart-warming portrayal as Jake, the good ol' boy from the south. Their charm and chemistry are immortalized in one of the final scenes that has the two on the Gulf Shore in a lightening storm. The two are fantastic together onscreen, and their chemistry left us hungry for more.
Melanie Carmichael (Witherspoon) is a rising fashion designer in New York City and is engaged to Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), one of the city's most eligible bachelors. But with her past haunting her dreams, Melanie must return to her southern hometown of Pigeon Creek, Alabama to deal with her past, which includes a husband, Jake (Josh Lucas), a name change, her birth name was Melanie Smooter, several past felony convictions, which landed her the nickname "Felony Melanie," and her very original parents, played by Mary Kay Place and Fred Ward. With Jake repeatedly refusing to sign the divorce papers, Melanie comes down to get the papers signed herself. But that just set off an entire series of events and accusations that ends with the sheriff showing up and Melanie in jail, which then leads to Melanie having to stick around in Pigeon Creek. She runs into many of her old friends, Bobby Ray (Ethan Embry) and Lurlynn (Melanie Lynskey), just to name a few, who are pretty surprised to see her back home. Melanie tries to make herself believe that she is better than everyone in her hometown, which can be seen in the bar scene that allows Witherspoon to use her comedy chops to give off just that feeling of superiority with just a bit of humor. Jake, of course, sees right through her and all of her crazy antics. After spending some time in her hometown, and with Jake, she starts to wonder if what she has in New York with Andrew is what she really wants, or would she rather stay with Jake, her first love. A line that sticks out in my mind that perfectly describes the situation is when Melanie's father, Earl Smooter, tells Melanie, "You can't ride two horses with one ass, sugarbean."
Secrets and her past are what Melanie is trying to run away from is the glue that brings and holds this movie together. When Andrew comes down to surprise Melanie, he gets some unexpected news about his fiancé's past from an unexpected source. Yet Melanie is not the only one with secrets, so do Jake and even Bobby Ray. The secrets are what make this movie so laugh out loud hilarious, especially how everyone learns about them.
As a fan of Reese Witherspoon, I knew that I could expect wit, comedy, and charm from a romantic comedy she was starring in, and that is just what you get when you watch Sweet Home Alabama, directed by Andy Tennant and written by Douglas J. Eboch and C. Jay Cox. It is a true match to the form of a romantic comedy, boy meets girl, boy and girl break up, and then they find their way back to each other. However, Sweet Home Alabama adds a little something extra with its southern charm, small town feel and people, and not to mention that southern accent that makes everything just the more charming. This movie hits all the high points, and deserves to be list among some of the best romantic comedies of all time such as When Harry Met Sally, Sixteen Candles, and 500 Days of Summer to name a few. If you haven't seen this movie yet you are missing out, it is definitely a movie worth watching and seeing which man, Jake or Andrew, is Melanie's perfect fit.
